Articulation and Transfer Criteria

Portland State University and Portland Community College
Associate of Applied Science in Fitness Technology

Portland State University (PSU) and Portland Community College (PCC) agree that students earning an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Fitness Technology from PCC may transfer to Portland State University with the following understandings:

1. This Agreement applies to students majoring in the Physical Activity/Exercise concentration of the Community Health major at PSU. (If the student chooses a different major, the courses from the AAS may or may not transfer to PSU.)
2. The intent of this Agreement is to facilitate baccalaureate attainment for students in the Fitness Technology AAS program at PCC. The combination of courses required in this AAS have been identified as providing the student with sufficient rigor and content to facilitate their success at PSU.
3. All courses numbered 100-level or above used to complete the AAS in Fitness Technology are eligible for transfer to PSU and may be applied as lower division credits toward the minimum 180 credits required to earn a baccalaureate degree. A minimum of 90 eligible credit hours of I 00-level or above coursework is required in order to grant the student junior standing at PSU for the purposes of registration only. To be eligible for transfer to PSU as part of this agreement, a grade of B or higher must be earned in all courses used toward the Physical Activity/Exercise All other courses must have a grade of at least a C or above. (See Credit Transfer Guide).
4. The courses will transfer as identified in the Credit Transfer
5. As appropriate, courses transferred may fulfill lower division degree, general education, elective, and/or major requirements. See appropriate Advising Guide for requirements that are current as of Fall 2009. (It is best for the student to work with an academic adviser to determine which catalog rules apply. Students must abide by the PSU seven year catalog eligibility rule, which holds that graduation requirements for a given catalog expire at the end of seven years.)

6. Students may have lower-division requirements to fulfill in addition to the AAS and will be responsible for completing all graduation requirements for PSU in effect at the time of graduation from PSU in order to earn a baccalaureate degree.

7. Students must meet PSU admission requirements in place at the time they apply for admission to PSU.

8. This Agreement will be in effect beginning Fall 2009, or upon date of last signature, whichever is later. Curriculum changes by either PSU or PCC must be communicated in writing to the Chief Academic Officer no later than June 30th of any academic year. Each partner assumes responsibility for informing their students of curricular revision that would impact their progress towards the This agreement will be reviewed every three (3) years to ensure the continued appropriateness and viability of this Agreement.

Note: PCC General Education requirements include 16 credit hours of General Education in the following: 1. Arts & Humanities; 2. Social Science; and 3. Mathematics, Natural & Physical

GEN = General credit and VOC TECH CREDIT = Credits apply to the 180 credits required to graduate, but are not assigned to a specific department and do not count as Upper Division credits. Advising Guide for Fitness Technology A.A.S. Articulation Agreement

Transferring to Portland State University (PSU) with the A.A.S. in Fitness Technology from Portland Community College (PCC) grants you junior status at PSU for the purposes of registration and for placement in PSU’s University Studies General Education curriculum. It is important that you are also aware of other requirements needed in order to graduate from PSU. This advising guide is designed to inform you of those requirements and help in planning your transfer to PSU. This is no substitute, however, for meeting with an academic adviser!

All credits used to toward graduation at PSU must be 100-level or above. The minimum number of credits needed to graduate from PSU is 180. Of those 180 credits, a minimum of 72 must be at the upper division (300 and 400) level. Note that PCC does not offer upper division coursework. Unless you are transferring upper division coursework from another 4-year college or university, you will need to complete at least 72 upper division credits at PSU.

To obtain a Bachelor’s degree from PSU, there are three sets of requirements you need to complete 180 credits with 72 upper division:

1. Academic Major Requirements
2. Degree Requirements (BA, BS)
3. General Education Requirements

The combination of credits from these three areas may not equal 180 credits or the 72 upper division credits, so you may have elective credits to take as well. While it is not a requirement to earn a minor, some students choose to use their elective credits toward a minor or even a second major. Talk with an academic adviser to determine your options.

This articulation agreement applies only to the concentration in Physical Activity /Exercise within the Community Health major. Refer to the PSU Bulletin or appropriate website for major requirements. If the AAS in Fitness Technology is completed, a minimum of 90 credits will transfer to PSU. ** Foreign Language Requirement for Bachelor of Arts: Students with no previous knowledge of a foreign language will need to complete two full years of a language at the college level for a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Students who already possess sufficient competence in a foreign language may meet the BA language requirement by completing any foreign language course numbered 203 or for which 203 is a prerequisite, or otherwise demonstrate proficiency with the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department at PSU.

Note: Students who graduated or would have graduated from high school in Oregon in 1997 or later must have two years of foreign language at the high school level or two terms at the college level to meet admission requirements, even if they plan to pursue a BS degree. Students transferring to PSU must submit a high school transcript if they completed this requirement at their high school.

3. General Education Requirements

All colleges and universities have general education requirements designed to provide the breadth of knowledge and skills expected from college graduates. At Portland State University, you will be required to follow the University Studies program for general education. This program emphasizes an understanding of communication, critical thinking, social and ethical responsibility, and the diversity of human experience.

Generally, the University Studies program consists of four components: Freshman Inquiry, Sophomore Inquiry, Upper Division Cluster, and Senior Capstone. Because you will be transferring with the A.A.S. in Fitness Technology at PCC, you will enter PSU with junior status. That means that you will only need to complete the Upper Division Cluster and Senior Capstone portions of University Studies.

What if you don’t complete the A.A.S.?

If you do not complete the A.A.S. in Fitness Technology at PCC or complete the concentration in Physical Activity / Exercise for the Community Health major at PSU, you will be placed in University Studies based on the number of transferable credits you complete. (Please note, if you do not complete the A.A.S., you may only transfer 12 credits of classes taken at the community level that transfer to PSU in the category of vocational/technical credits at PSU) Students begin with the course indicated below and complete the remainder of the UNST program. Once a student has registered for courses at Portland State as a formally admitted student, additional credits completed at another Institution will not change this placement. Academic Advising

Both PSU and PCC believe that academic advising should be a part of your entire academic career. Because you will be transferring through a specialized articulation agreement, academic advising becomes even more important in order to help you choose appropriate courses and complete your Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in an efficient manner. In addition to working with an adviser, you should plan to attend New Student Orientation at both PCC and PSU. When you apply for admission, you will receive information about Orientation dates and times.

Applying for Admission

Portland Community College:
To be accepted into the Fitness Technology Program, you must:

1. Have a HS Diploma or Equivalent
2. Submit an online application at: http://www.pcc.edu/admissions/
3. Attend a Fitness Orientation
4. Successfully complete MTH 65 and WR 121 with a grade of “C” or better
5. Complete and submit a Fitness Technology Program application
6. Complete an interview with the program director

Portland State University: Submit an application for undergraduate admission with the non-refundable application fee. Include official transcripts from all colleges or universities you have attended, including PCC. You must have a 2.25 GPA to be admissible. For transfer students applying Fall 2010 and later, completion of WR 121 with a C- or better is required. Deadlines may apply.
