How Sticky Wicket Became the Only Cricket Bar in the U.S.

Bringing Cricket to the People of Portland

Michael Rasko never expected YouTube highlights to spark a business idea—but they did. A casual interest in cricket led to deeper conversations with friends from cricket-playing nations, and one repeated theme emerged: there was nowhere to reliably watch cricket games in the U.S.

“If you go to a bar and ask them to put on the cricket game, they’ll likely just tell you they don’t get that channel—or that a game from another sport takes priority,” Michael explained. “So I decided to build a space for fans of the second most popular sport in the world to watch in community.”

That decision gave rise to Sticky Wicket, the only sports bar in the U.S. dedicated entirely to cricket. Located in the heart of St. Johns, Sticky Wicket blends the feel of a classic neighborhood pub with the excitement of international matches, nostalgic pub fare, and the warmth of global community.

A Vision Made Real—with Help from the PCC SBDC

Michael knew opening a bar wouldn’t be easy—especially as a first-time business owner without prior industry experience. That’s why he reached out to the Portland Community College Small Business Development Center (PCC SBDC) from the very beginning.

“Bars fail frequently, even for those with tons of experience,” Michael shared. “So I looked for any help or advice I could get—the PCC SBDC encouraged me to be thorough.”

Michael enrolled in Business Builders, a 12-week training program that helps entrepreneurs launch with confidence, and worked one-on-one with a PCC SBDC advisor for ongoing support.

The Road to Grand Opening

Sticky Wicket officially opened to the public on May 30, 2025! Just getting the doors open was a huge milestone.

“I opened! Sounds basic, but with the difficulties of leasing, insurance, hiring, a liquor license, and health code approvals, many places don’t even make it this far.”

Since opening, Michael has built a loyal customer base and is preparing to roll out special event hours for international matches. While still navigating the early financial challenges of any new business, Michael is optimistic.

“We need more sales and fewer expenses, but the support we’ve gotten from our customers has been very encouraging. In only five weeks, some guests have already visited more than 10 times.”

Thoughts for Others

Michael encourages other aspiring business owners to take advantage of PCC SBDC resources.

“At minimum, you should talk with an advisor. Some courses have a cost, but the coaching is free—so it only costs you your time. You might think your business is too unique, but there are aspects of business that are universal.”
