Details about this class

This course is specifically designed for heritage speakers—students who grew up speaking Spanish in the home environment but seek to enhance their existing language skills for use in a wider variety of academic and professional settings.

The curriculum focuses on developing comprehensive proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, utilizing topics and materials primarily relevant to the heritage speaker experience. Experienced non-heritage speakers are also welcome to enroll.

To determine if this course is the right fit for you, please consider the following:
  • Placement is Crucial: If you are unsure about your placement level, please utilize the PCC Language Placement guidelines or consult with our Spanish department to ensure you are in the class where you will succeed.
  • Active Participation is Expected: This class is highly interactive. Be prepared to share your personal experiences with the language, engage in discussions on cultural identity, and actively participate in all speaking and writing activities.
  • Focus on Formal Competence: While you may be fluent in conversational Spanish, this course will challenge you to understand the grammatical structures, formal writing conventions, and professional vocabulary needed for university and career settings.
  • Building a Community: This course is a unique opportunity to connect with peers who share a similar linguistic background and explore the richness of the diverse Spanish-speaking communities represented in our classroom.
