Details about this class

Welcome to PHY 100! This exciting course will show you the world of physics hiding in plain sight in your everyday life. We will learn how glasses and contact lenses improve vision, how earthquakes are detected and located, why spinning ice skaters rotate faster with their arms in, how power plants generate electricity and so much more! I look forward to introducing you to the fascinating physics all around us.

In PHY 100 students will not only learn the physics of our everyday life, but will also gain incredibly valuable skills in problem solving, scientific analysis, and critical thinking that will be useful in all future college classes as well as in the workplace.

This class will take place entirely in-person at the Sylvania campus. Attendance in lecture and lab is required, as students will learn best by working with other students in a collaborative setting. Lectures will give students opportunities to learn and practice using physics to solve problems that relate to the real world, and labs will offer a hands-on environment for students to conduct experiments and take measurements to verify physical laws and theories.

The textbook for this course is a custom version based on Conceptual Physical Science, 6th edition by Hewitt, Suchocki, Hewitt with only the chapters we need. For the textbook there are 3 purchasing options:

  1. Print version: Custom text available at the PCC Bookstore, or
  2. eText purchased through the PCC bookstore - you will get an access code which you can enter at the textbook link given in #3 below, or
  3. eText which you can purchase directly online: https://console.pearsoned.com/enrollment/ozkkfl
