Details about this class
MTH211 is the first of three courses (followed by MTH212 and/or MTH213) designed to help you think deeply about the mathematics you will one day teach to K-8 students. This course emphasizes exploration, collaboration, and reflection. Each class session, we will engage with mathematics together as a community of learners, focusing on visualization, hands-on activities, and clear communication of mathematical ideas -- both verbally and in writing. The cooperative learning environment will give you the chance to experience innovative teaching practices firsthand and prepare you for your future role as an educator.
You will need:
- Textbook, activity spiral, and manipulative kit. This is sold as a bundle at the bookstore. The bundle will be used for MTH211, 212, and 213.
- Growth mindset and curiosity about mathematics teaching in K-8
- Willingness to learn, make mistakes, and laugh together as a team
- Ability to be fully engaged with mathematics, peers, and instructor in class
- Time outside of class to explore topics covered in class, complete homework, read the textbook, and get ready for the next class. Expect to use 2 hours outside of class for every hour you spend in class. (This is also general guidance for most college classes.)
- Communication skills to learn cooperatively in groups and through class discussions.
Getting into a group with classmates early in the term and meeting regularly with this group is strongly encouraged. Learning to communicate mathematical ideas is a primary goal of this course, and the absolute best way to do so is to practice doing exactly that. Typically, there are routine quizzes throughout the term. Also, there will be summative exams in Weeks 5 and 9, with a cumulative final exam during finals week.
Technology
There is no additional technology required for this class.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
