Details about this class
In MM 129 – Intro Sound Production students will be introduced to broad skills in sound production and post production for multiple types of multimedia projects. This includes best practices in field sound recording for various multimedia projects including microphone selection and use, field recording, on-set recording for camera. We will develop skills in post production sound, including sound editing, mixing, sound design, and distribution. Class time will consist of technical and equipment demonstrations, media capture and editing workshops, viewing and discussing of work by diverse and relevant contemporary artists, and time for feedback and critique of students’ work. They will use the skills learned in class to tell their own stories and push their expressive limits.
Learning Outcomes•Learn fundamental techniques of recording sound using various microphones and field recording devices
•Learn to record audio in various small-crew narrative filmmaking situations
•Use Adobe software to edit and mix audio and video
•Learn to use these tools to broaden and increase your skills as a multimedia artist
Instructional ApproachThe weekly class sections will include: introduction of concepts, participatory demos of recording tools and techniques, audio editing techniques using Adobe Audition, listening to and discussing relevant examples, and in-class review and feedback of students’ work. There will be time for project work in class, but students are also expected to complete work outside of class. Students will be allowed to check out audio recording equipment and will have free access to editing software and will not need to purchase equipment. The class meetings will include a 20min break, and other smaller breaks as needed.
Technology
-Students will not need to purchase any production equipment or editing software, all will be provided by the Multimedia Program. It is optional but recommended that students have an external hard drive or large storage thumb drive to move their projects between computers in the classroom/lab and home use. Options will be discussed in first weeks of class, and students are not required to come in with any equipment.
Students will use sound production gear provided by the program: microphones, stands, wiring/grip equipment, recorders, etc.
Students will have access to free Adobe Creative Cloud and Protools accounts while participating in class. The primary programs we will use are Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Media Encoder, Protools, and a few others.
While there will be some time to work on projects in class, students are required to work on projects outside of class as well. Equipment will be checked out to students and software access (Adobe) will transfer between the classroom and students' personal computers, though there is also ample Open Lab hours at Moriarty building for students to work on projects and a laptop or access to personal computer is not required.
