Welcome!

My name is Mary Anne Funk,

Course Design:

In this course, we will be an audio-driven, focused class, including our weekly discussions. Everything we do will be focused on listening to audio stories, recording audio stories, sharing audio stories, writing for audio stories, editing audio excerpts, adding audio to visual elements, and, well, I think you get it  — All Things Audio

We will produce a collaborative class audio project, and you will work on creating an individual podcast or audio story for an end-of-the-term personal project.

Everyone will work on developing their individual stories and actively contribute to the collaborative class project.

Class Schedule:

We meet every Saturday from 10:00-1:50 p.m. at the Cascade Campus in room MAHB 215. See the location in the course location at the top of this page.

Class attendance is required; this is where we do the work. We run the class like a workshop and professional workspace.

Course Outcomes:

  • Plan, produce, launch, and distribute a podcast or audio story.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of an audio story structure.
  • Analyze podcast job descriptions, various podcast genres, and styles.
  • Demonstrate different equipment and methods used to record and edit a podcast. 
  • Determine solutions for challenging recording environments.

My goals as an instructor are to:
  • Create content that puts accessibility at the forefront of the design.
  • Provide a student-centric learning environment to provide a space where your interests and goals are brought into our lesson plan. 
  • Provide a space for students to discover what types of projects they are most passionate about.
  • Teach the importance of storytelling in our everyday lives.

Technology

Audio Equipment Requirement:

This is a Podcast/audio storytelling class. For your audio equipment, the bare minimum that you will need for the start of this class is:

  • Your own smartphone or digital recorder to record audio
  • Headphones for monitoring audio (over-the-ear headphones are best for monitoring)

On day one, we will look at different audio recording setups for your consideration to build onto your audio recording system.

Software Requirements:

  • We will review and experiment during activities with free and paid editing software. 
    • Any software that you are asked to use in your activities will be made available on the campus computers and made available either through the free version or a school license for editing at home.

Hardware

  • Laptop or Desktop Computer for at-home editing.
    • In class, we will have access to our lab computers. You are welcome to use the lab computers for our in-class lessons or your laptop during class for working on in-class lessons. 
      • Your laptop/desktop computers must be capable of running Audition, Audacity, and DeScript. To verify that the laptop or desktop computer is compatible with the software we are using, check the specs on the software websites. On the Audacity website, click on your system under downloads to see specific requirements.
      • IMPORTANT: NO Chromebooks. They are not compatible with the majority of software used in this class or other multimedia classes.
  • External hard drive (20 to 50 gigs)

 

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
