Details about this class

This is an in-person class that meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:00am - 12:50pm, at the Sylvania campus.

The class focuses on case studies in medieval and early modern world history, from c. 1000 CE - 1750 CE. Among other topics, it considers the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties of China, the Middle East under the Ottoman and Safavid empires, the evolution of the major world religions during the period, medieval and early modern Europe, the Spanish invasion of the Americas, and the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

The class is a combination of lectures and discussions, with the discussions focused on historical documents (i.e. what historians call "primary sources"). The assignments consist of online annotations (i.e. note taking) of the historical documents, short written analyses, and one "normal" college essay. There are no quizzes or exams.  No prior knowledge of history is required and the readings are kept concise and focused so that there isn't an overwhelming amount of work.

Feel free to contact me at christopher.brooks3@pcc.edu if you have any questions about the class.
