Details about this class
In this class, we will learn and practice reading strategies, learn new vocabulary, and read a wide variety of texts. You’ll be reading a lot and learning a lot!
Our books are the online reader Short Stories from the Outer Circle of World Englishes and our textbook Read Faster, Understand More by Timothy Krause. Read Faster, Understand More can be purchased as a physical copy from the SY bookstore or printed in the library; both books are also available online for free.
Our textbook uses an over-arching theme of social justice reading materials -- many authentic texts -- to focus on these reading skills:
- Vocabulary in Context
- Finding the Main Idea
- Identifying Supporting Details
- Implied Main Ideas
- Making Inferences
- Reading Infographics
- Patterns of Organization
- Purpose and Tone
Short Stories from the Outer Circle of World Englishes is an anthology of short stories from around the world. Each story is from a country in which English continues to play a major role long after independence from colonization. They are authentic examples of the power of language to celebrate both our cultural diversity as well as our common humanity.
In this class, you will work individually and also in pairs and small groups to discuss the readings and practice reading comprehension skills. You will also write about what you’ve read to show comprehension.
I'm looking forward to meeting you!
