Details about this class

Beginning Fall 2025 You are required to register for the linked sections of CH221Z and CH227Z that I teach (CRN 15163 (CH221Z) CRN 15164 (CH227Z)You must be able to attend both lecture and laboratory meetings to successfully complete this course. The course lecture and lab will be delivered in person on campus at the Cascade Campus in North Portland.  Students will need to attend these sections in person.  

Student's will be expected to attend two 2-hour lectures each week and a linked 3 hour lab (CRN 15164) in person each week. Lectures will be interactive and designed to help learning and measure understanding.  This information will be used to guide the speed of content and delivery methods.  Therefore student participation will be key to instruction.  There may be videos assigned to view prior to class sessions or to supplement lectures. 

Textbook: Chemistry: An Atoms Focused Approach, 4th Ed - the same textbook which is used for CH 221Z, CH 222Z, and CH 223Z will be used for this course. You need to make sure that you have access to the Smartwork homework system with the textbook.  You may wait to purchase this until the first week of class.  

POGIL Workbook: You are required to buy a guided inquiry workbook from the bookstore. You will complete activities from this workbook during class. 

The final exam will be IN-PERSON on Wednesday March 18th, 2:00pm-3:50pm. Please plan accordingly. 

All other exams will be given in-person during the Monday class meeting. (tentative dates will be available in the course syllabus at the start of the term). The syllabus will be sent out to students registered for this class at least 1 week before the term begins.

Technology

Most class material will be provided via D2L and online homework is required, an internet connection is required. A webcam is not required. 

Homework will be completed using Norton Smartwork. Students will need to purchase access to this platform. Please wait for the syllabus or talk to the instructor before purchasing.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
