Details about this class

Hello! Thanks for your interest in ART 103: Understanding New Media Arts (IN PERSON)!

This course offers a history of the relationship of art and media, covering objects ranging from photography, video, digital video and installation to sound and light-based works, performance, and social practice. The course examines technological developments that have affected and transformed perception and representation and considers the impact of time-based art, mass culture, and global electronic networks (Internet). A historical perspective will be introduced by examining the influence of new media on various avant-garde movements including Cubism and Dada. It will be fun!

We'll also visit as much art as possible on campus as well as during field trips to museums and galleries in Portland (alternate assignments will be provided if you can't attend these trips!).

Some topics we'll cover are:

  • Early Video Art
  • Digital Video and Installation
  • Light, Sound, and Land Art
  • Institutional Critique
  • Social Practice Art
  • Performance Art

There is no purchased textbook for this course. All readings and other learning resources will be provided via our course D2L page. Learning activities include: in-class activities, quizzes, a final reflection, and field trip(s) (alternate activities will be provided if you can't join the field trip with the class). This is an in person class that meets twice a week.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the course. I'm happy to help :)
