Details about this class

Hello! Thanks for your interest in ART 102: Understanding the Visual Arts!

In this class, we'll learn how to really look at art in order to understand its formal elements, subject matter, content, and context. While this class looks specifically at drawing, painting, and sculpture, the class takes a non-chronological approach with a focus on modern and contemporary local and regional art. We'll visit art around campus, as well as embark on two field trips to museums and galleries in Portland (alternate assignments will be provided if you can't attend these trips!).

Some topics we'll cover are:

  • The Visual Elements & Principles of Composition
  • Museums, Collecting, & Repatriation
  • Sculpture & Installation
  • Painting & Drawing

There is no purchased textbook for this course. All readings and other learning resources will be provided via our course D2L page. Learning activities include: in-class activities, quizzes (3), a final reflection, and field trip(s) (alternate activities will be provided if you can't join the field trip with the class). This is an in person class that will meet twice a week.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the course. I'm happy to help :)
