Details about this class

Join me this summer to experiment, create, and tell stories in immersive 360 environments.

No prior VR experience is required, but students should be ready to collaborate, try new approaches, and think creatively about how audiences experience stories.

This course explores ways of telling stories that move beyond the traditional screen and into immersive, 360-degree spatial environments. At the heart of the course is storytelling, creating experiences that invite viewers to step inside a moment, see from a new perspective, and form a deeper connection to the story.

Students will develop skills in immersive storytelling, learning how stories change when the viewer is placed inside the scene and can look around freely. Instead of working within a fixed frame, students will begin to think about storytelling in a 360-degree space, where both the creator and the viewer shape the experience.

Our time together is built around weekly hands-on, skill-based learning. Through a series of workshops, students will build practical experience in immersive media production, including 360 video, interactive 360 photography, immersive audio, photogrammetry, and shared or constructed virtual spaces as storytelling environments.

Throughout the term, students will create a series of short projects that explore different ways a story can be experienced through observation, exploration, and participation. The course will also include collaborative field-based projects with departments on campus and Hungry Mantas, a local organization, where students will capture real locations and transform them into interactive 360 experiences.

By the end of the course, students will develop a final immersive storytelling project that reflects their voice as a storyteller and considers how an audience experiences the work.

Skills from this course connect to creative and professional work in multimedia production, video production, immersive media, interactive storytelling, documentary, education and training media, virtual production, UX/UI, and experience design.
