Details about this class

Before coming to PCC, I led a university writing center. As a result, I became familiar with the writing skills students needed to be successful in their future classes. I look forward to helping you practice these skills and be ready for whatever is next for you after the ESOL program!

Our class is a hybrid class. This means we meet in-person on Tuesdays, and we meet on Zoom on ThursdaysIt will be very difficult to pass the class if you cannot attend most of the Tuesday meetings. I will record our classes in case you want to review later or missed a class, but breakout rooms are not saved in Zoom recordings. As a result, you may miss a lot of information if you are absent too often.

We are using a free textbook. I will post all the handouts and homework in D2L. However, if you prefer to write your homework by hand, you can purchase a paper copy of the textbook and the workbook at the Rock Creek bookstore. It may be cheaper than printing each page on your own.

Technology

A microphone is necessary for our Thursday classes because you will be talking in groups. While a webcam is not required, your classmates may feel more comfortable if they can see you when you are in breakout rooms together.

We will use Zoom on Thursdays. It is a good idea to download the Zoom app to your computer and sign in with your PCC account. That way, I know only registered students are in our class meetings!

We will be using Google Docs and Google Drive for this class. Please make sure that you can access your PCC Google account to use these features. It is not necessary to use Microsoft Word, but you can download and use it if you like some of the features.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
