Welcome! For Sping Term 2024, Basic Legal Research will meet remotely on Zoom each Thursday at 6:30pm. In addition to the books available in the bookstore, there is a separate online resource that must be purchased separately for a $29 subscription fee and an open source (free) textbook.

Required Texts for PL 203 Basic Legal Research:

  • Available from the PCC Bookstore: The Bluebook, a Uniform System of Citation, 21st ed. or Online Bluebook access at www.legalbluebook.com.
  • Available from the PCC Bookstore: Barris, Understanding and Mastering the Bluebook, 4th Ed.(Carolina Academic Press, 2020).
  • You will also need an open source legal research textbook (free) available from the CALI website.
    • You will need to register with CALI first as a PCC paralegal student.
    • Instructions on this process will be available in the D2L course and sent via email to you the week before the term begins.

Additional online learning tool ($29 subscription fee):

  • Mastering the Bluebook Interactive Exercises (MBIE):  Legal citation is a critical skill required of all legal professionals and is an important part of this course. To ensure that you are armed with the citation skills you need, we will be using the Bluebook (21st ed.) and the text Understanding and Mastering the Bluebook (4th Ed.). Additionally, we will be using the online learning tool Mastering the Bluebook Interactive Exercises (MBIE), to learn and practice citation form. To begin using MBIE, you will complete a two-step process once class begins. Details will be available in D2L.
