Details about this class

How long does it take a cup of coffee to cool to room temperature? What do we expect the population of Portland to be in 10 years? How do archaeologists know the age of ancient artifacts and what does it have to do with carbon radioactivity?

This class explores mathematical objects called functions that help us describe numerical relationships in the real world. We will develop the notion of a function and then discuss these relationships by reading and writing function notation.

To help you master function notation, there will be an emphasis on written work. Homework and lab write-ups will follow consistent formatting guidelines, including the use of engineering paper which can be purchased for a small amount at the bookstore. Depending on your writing habits and handwriting, 100 pages should be sufficient for the term.

Technology

There is no additional technology required for this class.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
