Details about this class

Hi and thanks for checking this page! This is an in person class that meets on two days each week.

Math in Society looks at applied, real-world math and tools that you can use to make quantitative decisions in your life. My goal is to make math fun, relevant and interesting with a social justice focus.

This class will be partially flipped with some lecture videos to watch and fill in the notes outside of class. Some will be done during class. We will also work on problems together in class, there will be online and written homework and a project. All Math and Stat classes have proctored exam requirements. These will be during our scheduled class times.

Please look for the course notes packet at the bookstore. I will also send you the PDF if you prefer to print it yourself or through the Multnomah County Library for free.

The book is free online and all the apps we use are free. We will look at aspects of social justice through the course. You can get a feel for my style of teaching through videos on YouTube, old syllabi and previous course materials at caraleemath.com. Feel free to email me with any questions at cara.lee@pcc.edu.

Technology

Access to a printer is helpful but not required. You can buy all the pages needed from the bookstore. There will be video lectures with fill-in notes. We will use some free online stats calculators that are required. I will show you how to use all of these in videos and during class.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities
