Details about this class
Welcome to JPN103: First Year Japanese - Third Term (CRN 21121)
Placement:
JPN103 is intended for students who have completed JPN102 or its equivalent. Students who do not meet this prerequisite must contact the instructor to take a placement test and obtain an override to enroll. If you are unsure whether JPN103 is the appropriate course for you, or if you have not completed the prerequisite, please email me to arrange a placement test at: nao.okumura@pcc.edu
In this course you will learn to speak, read, write and understand Japanese from the first day of class. We have face to face class meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am - 12:20pm. You can access our course site and materials by going through D2L Brightspace - the learning platform that all courses use at PCC.
We use an immersion-style approach. During class meetings, we engage in a variety of pair, small-group, and whole-class activities designed to help you learn to read, write, speak, and understand Japanese. Language learning works best when people get to know and trust one another—this can be challenging, but it is also very rewarding.
In addition to our class meetings, you will also have work that you will complete asynchronously on your own time, such as homework and projects. You will need to spend at least 4-5 hours a week studying and completing homework assignments per week. I also will offer office hours where we can meet one-on-one so that I can help and answer your questions.
Feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions about the course (nao.okumura@pcc.edu).
Required course materials:
We use the following textbook and workbook for JPN101, 102 and 103. The physical textbook is preferred to the e-book.

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
