Details about this class
This is an in-person class that meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:00am - 10:50am, at the Sylvania campus.
The class focuses on case studies in modern world history, starting in about 1750 CE and going to the early twenty-first century. We consider topics like the Atlantic revolutions, the industrial revolution, European imperialism, the world wars, the Cold War, postwar economic and social change, among others. The focus of the class is considering the most important historical trends and changes of the last 250 years that have shaped the contemporary world.
The class is a combination of lectures and discussions, with the discussions focused on historical documents (i.e. what historians call "primary sources"). The assignments consist of online annotations (i.e. note taking) of the historical documents, short written analyses, and one "normal" college essay. There are no quizzes or exams. No prior knowledge of history is required and the readings are kept concise and focused so that there isn't an overwhelming amount of work.
Feel free to contact me at christopher.brooks3@pcc.edu if you have any questions about the class.
