Details about this class
Welcome to CHN 102: First Year Chinese - Second Term (CRN 25609)
Placement:
CHN102 is for students having completed CHN101 or the equivalent. If you are uncertain whether CHN 102 is the appropriate course for you, please email me (cilei.han@pcc.edu) a brief self-introduction written (or typed) in Chinese characters, using either simplified or traditional script. You can also consult the CHN 102 CCOG page for an overview of the course content.
Course Highlights:
This course builds upon previously acquired skills to help students develop Novice High proficiency in vocabulary and grammar. Students expand their speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities through increasingly complex and meaningful everyday situations. Emphasis is placed on narration and written expression, including short narratives, diary entries, letters, and reflections on personal Chinese language learning experiences.
Workload:
In addition to our class meetings (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00–7:20 PM, Sylvania Campus), you will complete additional coursework asynchronously on your own time, including homework and projects. You should plan to spend at least 4–5 hours per week studying and completing assignments.
Course Materials:
We will continue using the CHN 101 textbook and workbook this term. If you are new to the course, please purchase the following materials:
1. Textbook: Liu, Yuehua et al. Integrated Chinese, Level 1- Part 1 Textbook (4th Edition, Simplified Character Edition). Boston: Cheng & Tsui, 2017. ISBN 9781622917457.
2. Workbook: Liu, Yuehua et al. Integrated Chinese, Level 1 - Part 1 Workbook (4th Edition, Simplified Character Edition). Boston: Cheng & Tsui, 2017. ISBN 9781622911363.
3. Download the accompanying audio files for the textbook and workbook from the Cheng & Tsui website at https://www.cheng-tsui.com/resources/ic after acquiring the course materials.
Technology
- Students are expected to access the most up-to-date class schedule and assignment instructions on D2L Brightspace; therefore, reliable internet access and a computer or tablet are required.
- A Simplified Chinese keyboard must be installed for written assignments.
- A headset or earbuds with a built-in microphone are strongly recommended for listening and speaking activities to ensure clear audio quality.
- Students are also responsible for downloading the textbook and workbook audio files and listening to them frequently at home.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
