Details about this class

Welcome to my Chemistry 228Z course details page.  I hope you are as eager as I am to get started in the class!  I love teaching chemistry and working with students in lab.

Learning chemistry will test your perceptions.  Just like having a glass half full or half empty, successfully studying chemistry deals with your attitude towards the course.  At some points you may feel overwhelmed and find the concepts challenging.  However, if you remain positive about the material, I think you have a better chance to succeed.  Yes, it may be difficult at times (particularly when we get into some of the more theoretical discussions), but that doesn't mean it is beyond your ability to understand.

Experiments correspond to the topics covered in CH 222Z including the fundamentals of intermolecular interactions, stoichiometric relationships, chemical equilibria and their application to the synthesis, identification, and analysis of chemical compounds. CH 228Z is the laboratory component; CH 222Z is the lecture course. Must be co-registered with CH 222Z.

Because this is a science major's course, the entering student should be able to demonstrate prerequisite math and chemistry skills. The student must have successfully completed CH221Z and Ch227Z.

To help you decide if chemistry class is right for you, here is an outline of what your responsibilities will be. Each week you will have:

  • Read and print the experiment
  • Complete the prelab assignment prior to class
  • Print the data sheet
  • Collect data in lab
  • Analyze your data and answer any questions
  • Complete a postlab assignment

This class requires that you arrive at the laboratory each week prepared to conduct an experiment.  Your success in the class will be dependent on your preparation prior to class, and you conduct and work during the lab.

Technology

There is no additional technology required for this class.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.

Students with disabilities

Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
