Course Description:

Chemistry 221 is the first of three terms in the general chemistry series, 5-credit course, designed to provide a year of general chemistry to science majors. It will meet transfer requirements for such science majors as: chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, pre-medicine, and other pre-professional programs. The class consists of lecture, recitation and laboratory. The lecture time is used to provide the student with basic chemical concepts and mathematical applications to chemistry. The recitation time is for practicing problem solving in small group settings allowing for greater student-student as well as student-teacher contact and encouraging individual and team development. The laboratory re-enforces concepts presented in lecture and provides the student a hands-on opportunity to explore these.

Chemistry 221 will cover measurements, classification and properties of matter, nomenclature, atomic structure and modern atomic theory, periodic table and chemical periodicity, and chemical bonding.  Prerequisites: WR 115 and RD 115 or equivalent placement test scores, MTH 111, and CH 151 or instructor approval. Audit available. Please come speak with me if you have any questions about prerequisites or preparedness for this course.

Students should reasonably expect to spend a minimum of 15 hours per week outside of class on this course.  Learning chemistry is like learning a foreign language and requires a lot of time and effort on the student’s part.  A firm grasp of CH221 concepts is essential for students continuing on to CH222 and CH223.
