Details about this class

Welcome to Prep Chem! I think this class is tons of fun and hope you will too. I am a strong believer that all students come into my classroom with knowledge that prepares them for class and as a community we discover how that knowledge relates to the course material. Strong classroom community is very important to me.  This means that class is participatory even in lectures.

The lecture portion of the class will be split between Monday and Wednesday evenings. There will be one 50-minute IN-PERSON session starting at 6pm prior to the start of the IN-PERSON laboratory meeting on Monday evenings. The remaining lecture will be offered remotely via Zoom on Wednesday evenings 6-8:50pm. Students need to plan to be physically on campus from 6-10pm on Mondays and logged into zoom on Wednesdays.

The in person portion of this course will be held at the Cascade Campus in North Portland.  Students will need to attend the lab section and in person lecture section at the cascade campus. There are no remote labs for this course.  Students will work with one partner during the lab and share materials.

The lecture will be delivered in person and in zoom with support from online materials on the D2L page. Students will be expected to attend at the time listed.  The course content will be delivered in a week-by-week module approach. Each week's content will be contained within a separate module that includes: synchronous lecture activities, pre-recorded video lectures, copies of notes from the videos, laboratory assignments, homework, quiz and an activity. The instructor will hold office hours during the week to support students.

Students do not need to purchase a textbook for this course. The course will be using an OER textbook and WeBWorK homework.  These will be freely provided to all students.  An internet connection and computer will be required.

The only required materials student need to purchase are a CH 151 lab manual and safety googles. Both can be purchased at the Cascade bookstore. There are goggles available to borrow in the laboratory that are sanitized between lab periods if students do not wish to buy their own.

The final exam will be IN-PERSON on Monday June 10th 6:00pm-7:50pm. Please plan accordingly.

All other exams will be given in-person during the Monday on campus class meeting before the laboratory class at 7:00 pm (tentative dates will be available in the course syllabus at the start of the term). The syllabus will be sent out to students registered for this class at least 1 week before the term begins.

If you have any questions please contact the instructor via email.

Technology

Since some class content will be delivered remotely, an internet connection is required. A webcam is not required.

Wednesday class sessions will be held remotely via Zoom 6-8:50pm. Students should plan to be in attendance for the Zoom meetings each Wednesday.

The course will be using an OER textbook and WeBWorK homework.  No purchase of these is necessary.  These will be freely provided to all students.  An internet connection and computer will be required.

Students will however, need to purchase a lab manual from the Cascade bookstore before week 2 of class.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
