Details about this class
I am extremely humbled and excited to be teaching this course. We'll spend 10 weeks learning how to unlearn colonized pedagogy and cultural narratives while also learning how to receive and navigate Indigenous ones. While Anthropology isn't the only place to endeavor in Indigenous inclusion, it's an important space to do the work given the discipline's deep colonial origins. What did anthropologists get right and what did they get wrong? How has Anthropology been used as a weapon against Indigenous Peoples? How can it be used as a tool to support re-Indigenization and self-determination? These questions can be answered if we focus on truths grounded in Indigenous cultures, experiences, and voices.
We'll consider knowledge gifted to us by several Pacific Northwest Indigenous Peoples about identity, language, community, concepts of land and territory, Knowledge systems, care-taking models, generational experiences with settler colonialism (including white supremacy, Knowledge theft, English-language domination, genocide, relocation, assimilation), and generational experiences of self-determining, cultural revitalization, and healing (including food sovereignty, "land back" initiatives and movements, repatriation, Knowledge ownership).
You are not alone on this journey. You and your peers will create community, one that's culturally responsive, anti-racist, and willing to receive hard truths. It must be safe, respectful, compassionate, brave, innovative, collaborative and smart for all of us to succeed.
