Details about this class
Attendance and participation in all remote synchronous sessions is required. The class is designed to provide tools for making paintings such as color mixing, color context, color composition, and color as emotion. From weeks 1-5 assignments are focussed on these tools through specific exercises, and in weeks 6-11 the focus shifts to thematic exercises in landscape, portrait, animals, the night. A short paper is also part of course work. Homework should take 3-5 hours per week outside of class. This class is combined with Art 281a, Painting II, in which these exercises are explored in greater depth.
Why a remote class to learn painting?
I can offer you personal and visual, non-invasive feedback on your work, which if you review and it makes sense to you, allows you to rework that assignment and resubmit it for a better grade. This way of teaching allows you to review these comments when you are ready to hear them, which does not happen in traditional face to face classes.
Technology
Good WIFi, camera with audio, and a camera for documenting and editing your paintings.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
