Details about this class

Drawing the Human Figure is a large subject requiring various strategies for visualization. These include studying the anatomical structures as well as different modes of seeing (gesture, contour drawing, tonal drawing) and different media (graphite, ink and charcoal). Learning these visual strategies and anatomical structures gives you a way of applying them to drawing from live models via Zoom.  Diversity of modes and diversity of media creates a deeper understanding of seeing and responding to what you see.  Attendance to all live sessions is required (6 hrs/week). A short paper is part of coursework, as well as participation in online discussions.

There are advantages and disadvantages to this platform.  Advantages include equal access to the view of the model and the instructor's demonstration. The platform also allows for visual, digital and non-invasive feedback on your work, so you can clearly see and understand what you might not have seen.  Reworking drawings is an essential foundational skill in art. Disadvantages are that the remote platform can encourage passivity and procrastination, so active engagement in the class and its activities are important for student success.

Technology

Because the class is conducted synchronously via Zoom, WIFI, a webcam and mic are required as well as a quiet place to work.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
