Details about this class
Open Lab/Darkroom: Students will need to utilize the darkroom outside and in addition to class hours in order to succeed in the class. Open lab hours are available and posted each term. Students are encouraged to explore both darkroom facilities at Southeast and Sylvania Campuses.
Darkroom I & II are taught through use of D2L to provide links, resources and materials for the coursework. In class lectures, activities, demonstrations and exercises will be in person and live and interactive with other students and the instructor.
During class we're going to be making images, printing, developing and being nerdy in the labs!
Of course, you need to make your work (photograph) outside of class time as well as attend more open lab hours - but you'll soon find how enjoyable it is to lose yourself in the process of making images.
Attendance to both class sessions each week is highly recommended and additional hours for open lab are available at both the SE Campus and at our Digital Photo Lab and smaller Darkroom at Sylvania Campus on a weekly basis. As a registered student you will have access to either of the labs whenever they are available on the schedule. The shuttle makes it a short trip with no parking hassle between the campuses and SE Campus, where our HOME lab will be, is an incredible place to work and our community, surroundings and neighborhood make it an excellent spot to explore with your camera, should you wish to do that.
Students who have never taken the darkroom class at PCC will register for 142 | students who have, will register for 143 - there's nothing wrong with beginning at the start! We will start printing week two so you will have time to get your supplies after our first meeting.
Technology
This class uses FILM and FILM CAMERAS
there are a limited number of film cameras to check out via the photo program, but students who need a camera can wait until the first week of class and speak to the instructor for some additional options.
Most cameras that are film can either be found through purchasing at a reputable local shop such as Blue Moon Camera and Machine. If you have a camera and you're not sure if it can work - please email me a picture of the front and of the inside of it and I'll try to assist. Or - you can wait and bring it the first day of class.
Paper, Film & Other Supplies:
Other equipment and materials that students would need are on the supply list - but we have low cost options to share with folks the first week of class, so other than your camera - you can wait to purchase your paper and film.
Checkout of some equipment is available for registered students - cameras, tripods, etc.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
