Details about this class

Hello! Thanks for your interest in ART 103: Understanding New Media Arts!

Is New Media Art truly “new”? How is New Media Art both different from traditional art forms and informed by art history? What is the distinction between New Media Art and new media? How does New Media Art employ and respond to emerging technologies? In what ways does New Media Art blur the boundaries between the sciences and the arts? These are just some of the questions we'll explore in this class that focuses on the intersection of art and new technologies!

We'll visit art around campus, as well as embark on two field trips to museums and galleries in Portland (alternate assignments will be provided if you can't attend these trips!).

Some topics we'll cover are:

  • Early Video Art
  • Digital Video and Installation
  • Light, Sound, and Land Art
  • Institutional Critique
  • Social Practice Art
  • Performance Art

There is no purchased textbook for this course. All readings and other learning resources will be provided via our course D2L page. Learning activities include: in-class activities, quizzes (3), a final reflection, and field trip(s) (alternate activities will be provided if you can't join the field trip with the class). This is an in person class that meets twice a week.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the course. I'm happy to help :)
