Details about this class

The required text for this course is an eBook:  Motivational Interviewing: Leveling Up (2022, Crawford).  To purchase this eBook, follow the link:  Motivational Interviewing: Leveling Up | Higher Education (kendallhunt.com)  When you purchase this book you will be directed to download a platform to enter your access code. Do not lose the access code. Reach out to the instructor if you have difficulty accessing the eBook. You also have an option to purchase an alternative book that is available in hard copy.  Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow, fourth edition (Miller & Rollnick, 2023).  Either one is required for the course and will bring you success.  The nature and goals of this course are skill development.  There are a lot of good counseling methods, and this course specifically focuses on motivational interviewing.  Your performance will be evaluated according to the evidence from research and rating scales developed for the purpose of determining competence in motivational interviewing.  You will recognize skills from basic counseling and advanced counseling.  These similarities will be helpful to continue growing your skills, and likely not sufficient for success in the complex practice of motivational interviewing.  This class is both challenging and rewarding.  By the end of the term, you will know more about what you are doing as a counselor and why.

Technology

The classes in this course will be remote, which requires reliable access to internet, a computer, laptop, or tablet device. Attendance in the zoom online classroom is mandatory.  Every student will be required to submit video-recorded counseling demonstrations, which means students need working cameras and microphones in addition to audio.  Students will need to have the ability to record either via zoom or an alternative method and submit a full transcript of the demonstration as part of the assignment.  Most zoom platforms include a running caption that can be printed for the transcript.  Other students in the past have utilized free online transcribing software such as, Transcribe Me or Otter AI.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
