For a more comprehensive overview of this class, please visit our website to access the Liquid Class Syllabus. This course spans 4 weeks and will be conducted Remotely on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 4:20 pm, starting on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024.

About this course:

The course provides an overview of addiction to nicotine products, as well as evidence-based practices that have been shown to be effective in supporting successful cessation of smoking and chew use. The course also covers current information on vaping trends and some of the known health risks to date.

Prerequisites for this course include WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit option is available.

 

Learning Opportunity Throughout the 4-week term, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn how use of chew, smoke, and/or vape impacts us all, therefore current, former and never users of nicotine and/or tobacco products must be qualified to address this topic.
  • Invite a person in contemplation stage of change to explore their relationship with nicotine and/or tobacco to help you pass your class.
  • Learn and practice evidence-based brief interventions that have been proven effective in helping individuals reduce or stop their nicotine and/or tobacco use.
  • Collect data to determine level of use; mild, moderate or severe and articulate to your person how these findings can be helpful.
  • Demonstrate your understanding of the course material through summaries in the form of DAP (Data Assessment and Plan) notes.
  • Present a final assignment that showcases your chosen person’s vision of their current and/or future relationship with tobacco and nicotine products and/or what they learned from you.

All assignments are due at the beginning of each class.


Disclaimer: This class is experiential in nature and focuses on tangible practices and outcomes. With 480K people dying each year from tobacco related illnesses, it is evident that tobacco/nicotine use affects us all. By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply your knowledge of addiction to tobacco/nicotine products to deliver accurate information to individuals and/or groups.
  2. Understand and deliver evidence-based nicotine cessation strategies to assist in nicotine cessation and harm reduction efforts.
  3. Compile a list of practices and resources that can be used as a referral source for individuals who currently use nicotine (chew, smoke, vape).

The main goal of this learning experience is to increase our confidence in inviting individuals to explore their relations with tobacco and/or nicotine products.

For this course, we will be using Open Educational Resources, and all required materials will be available electronically and posted on D2L Brightspace.

We will be using Google Docs, Google Sheets, PDFs, Power Points, and some Word Docs.
