Details about this class
Thank you for your interest in my WR 241/244 class -- Creative Writing: Fiction.
In this class, we will explore the art of fiction writing. We'll consider the core elements of that are generally understood to be essential in a fictional story, we'll give students many opportunities to gain experience as both a writer and a reader of fiction, and we'll encourage each student's creativity and expression in ways that should be useful not only during our class together but also into the future.
This Fiction Workshop is an IN-PERSON class. We'll meet in-person at PCC Southeast from 12-2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This means that you are expected to attend our class when it meets in order to participate in and pass our class.
In addition to the time that we meet together at PCC Southeast, this class will also require you to do work outside of the classroom, such as completing the assigned readings, producing your own original writing, and responding on the short stories written by your classmates.
The assignments in this class will include the following:
- Attendance and Participation on campus at PCC SE
- Multiple "Craft Exercises" -- short (1-page) exercises where you focus on a particular element of the craft
- Original Short Story -- all students will write at least 1 original short story, approx. 1000-3000 words
- Typed feedback for classmates on their Original Short Stories
- Initial and Midterm Self-Assessments
- A brief Project (shared with classmates in an online discussion board) about a writer who has inspired you
- Brief Surveys at certain points during the term
- Final Portfolio -- includes a revised Short Story, plus a Reflective Essay to introduce the Portfolio, and more

Technology
This course will require the basics for taking college classes in the 2020's -- internet access, and a functioning computer or tablet. This is how you will produce original works of fiction for our class, and it's also how you'll read assigned works of fiction and provide feedback for classmates.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
