Details about this class
Welcome to fall term 2025!
You are about to begin Foundations of Elementary Mathematics I (MTH 211), and your instructor, Michelle Kutter, is excited to share this journey with you. MTH 211 is the first of three courses (followed by MTH 212 and/or MTH 213) designed to help you think deeply about the mathematics you will one day teach to K–8 students. Unlike traditional math classes, this course emphasizes exploration, collaboration, and reflection. Each day, we will engage with mathematics together as a community of learners, focusing on visualization, hands-on activities, and clear communication of mathematical ideas—both verbally and in writing. The cooperative learning environment will give you the chance to experience engaging, active, and innovative teaching practices firsthand while preparing you mathematically for your future role as a math educator.
Class will be held in person at Southeast campus during the times and days listed in the schedule. We will use every minute of the 2 hour and 20 minute class.
You will need:
-
Textbook, activity spiral, and manipulatives kit. This is sold as a bundle at the bookstore. The bundle will be used for MTH 211, 212, and 213.
-
Growth mindset and curiosity about mathematics teaching in K-8
-
Willingness to learn, make mistakes, and laugh together as a team
-
Ability to be fully engaged with mathematics, peers, and instructor in class
-
Time outside of class to explore topics covered in class, complete homework, read the textbook, and get ready for the next class. Expect to use two hours for every hour you spend in class.
-
Communication skills to learn cooperatively in groups and through class discussions.
Forming a study group with your classmates early in the term—and meeting with them regularly—is highly recommended. Throughout the term, you can expect routine quizzes to help you stay on track. In addition, there will be three summative exams, which includes a cumulative final exam on the Tuesday of finals week.
As the term approaches, you’ll receive an email at your PCC.edu address with more details about the course.
I can't wait to start!
