Details about this class

We live in strange and interesting times, and it can be difficult to separate myth from reality. I have designed this course to help learners better understand how we got here by exploring social, cultural, economic, and (of course) political changes in the United States from 1840 to 1914. Topics include westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Indigenous resistance, the Gilded Age, and the Progressive Era.

As your instructor, I will foster an inclusive and inviting atmosphere that will serve a diverse group of learners. In addition to class sessions, I promise to be present and available through discussion forums, email, and detailed feedback on your coursework. 

Coursework will consist of a multi-part Be the Historian project and two exams. The exams will be partially open notes--you may bring a pre-written notecard (5"x7") with notes on the front and back.

No show policy

Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
