Details about this class
Hello! My name is Doree, and I am the teacher for this Level 8 Academic Reading class. In this class, we will learn and practice reading strategies, learn new vocabulary, and read a wide variety of texts. You’ll be reading a lot and learning a lot!
Our required novel is Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly, and the required textbook is Read Faster, Understand More: Advanced Academic Reading Skills for English Language Learners by Timothy Krause. These are available in the SE Bookstore.
In the skills textbook, we will cover the following reading skills and strategies during the term:
- Vocabulary meaning from context
- Finding the main idea
- Identifying supporting details
- Implied main ideas
- Making inferences
- Purpose and Tone
In this class, you will work individually and also in pairs and small groups to discuss the readings and practice reading comprehension skills. You will also write about what you’ve read to show comprehension.
We will meet from 9:00 to 11:20 am every Monday and Wednesday in Mt. Tabor Hall Room 137. If you have any questions, please email me at doree.dennis@pcc.edu. I look forward to meeting you in person on Monday, September 21st!
