Details about this class
In this course, students learn about materials and processes as they relate to product manufacturing. Students practice selecting appropriate manufacturing processes and materials for a design project, considering cost, efficacy and capabilities. Students develop an understanding of the material's effect on sustainability, recyclability, and manufacturability.
Students apply various manufacturing processes and learn the industry standards and limits of the processes. Covered manufacturing processes include injection molding, aluminum extrusions, sheet metal fabrication, machining, die casting, etc.
For the term project, students develop design models, select appropriate materials and apply manufacturing requirements. The detail design is completed using CAD, and contains at least two parts. An assembly file is created to demonstrate fit, form and function.
This course is a hybrid, with some content delivered in person and some delivered asynchronously online. Students complete an asynchronous module prior to attending class, then apply the topics during the class meeting. Links to the online reading and video materials provided in course shell. Group work is conducted during class time; students may complete alternates to the in-class group work assignments later if unable to attend class
Contact instructor if access to online materials are needed prior to start of term.
Technology
Some assignments for this course require the use of 3D CAD software. Students may use Solidworks, Inventor and/or Fusion 360. The instructor will use Solidworks for most assignment demonstrations.
Students may continue to use student licenses installed for previous classes. The Southeast campus library hosts six CADD workstations, available in the library computer lab. Contact instructor with questions.
