Details about this class

This course introduces the historical foundations of Chicano and Latino Studies by examining the experiences of Latino communities in the United States from the colonial period to the present. Through readings, films, and historical documents, we will explore topics such as identity, race, colonialism, migration, citizenship, labor, and social movements. By understanding the historical forces that have shaped Latino communities, students will develop a stronger foundation for analyzing contemporary issues affecting these communities today.

The required textbook for this course is listed below. All other required readings and course materials will be available through Brightspace (D2L).

Gómez, L. E. (2020). Inventing Latinos: A New Story of American Racism. New York: The New Press.

Any format of this textbook is acceptable, including new or used copies, paperback or hardcover, e-book, or audiobook. I encourage you to choose whichever option best fits your learning style and budget.

Please complete the assigned readings before coming to class. Our class meetings are designed to build on the readings rather than repeat them, allowing us to spend our time discussing key ideas, asking questions, and developing a deeper understanding of the histories and experiences of Chicanx and Latinx communities in the United States.
