Details about this class
Thank you for considering this course!
Knowing that student enrolled in this class come with various chemistry backgrounds, this course utilizes Mastery-Based Learning to help all students achieve the learning goals for this course. This means that students will have the opportunity to retake weekly quiz assessments until mastery is achieved.
Both the lab and lecture for this course are in-person at the Sylvania Campus. We will meet in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am-11:20 am (lecture) and on Tuesdays from 12:30 pm-3:20 pm (lab). You need to be able to attend both lecture and laboratory components in order to register for the course.
Lecture and lab sessions will be interactive and designed to help learning and measure understanding. This information will be used to guide the speed of content and delivery methods. Therefore, student participation will be key to instruction. Because lecture and lab sessions are in person, there will not be zoom recordings of the classes. Lecture slides will be posted on the class website in D2L.
This class will include completing in-class group problem-solving activities, clicker questions, hands-on laboratory experiments, lecture and lab homework assignments, weekly quizzes, mid-term exams, and a final exam. Office hours will be available in person and on Zoom.
Modified Mastering Chemistry (MMC) is the required online homework website and it is bundled with our textbook. There is a cost-saving option for the textbook/MMC bundle. At the beginning of the term, each student is given a 14-day free trial of MMC, which comes with an electronic copy of the textbook. You can try this and if it works for you, you can pay to continue the course with the MMC & eText combination. If you’d prefer a physical textbook, you can buy it from the bookstore and it comes with an access code for the MMC website. (Please note that the physical textbook has to be bought from the PCC bookstore for the access code to work.)
I will contact enrolled students by email near the beginning of the term with more information on the course. You may contact me at nicole.naibert@pcc.edu [opens in new window] for more information. I look forward to working with you to build a strong chemistry foundation!
