Details about this class
Welcome to Chem 104Z! I think this class is tons of fun and hope you will too. I am a strong believer that all students come into my classroom with knowledge that prepares them for class and as a community we discover how that knowledge relates to the course material. Strong classroom community is very important to me. This means that class is participatory.
The course will be delivered in person on campus at the Cascade Campus in North Portland. Students will be expected to attend at the time listed. The course content will be delivered in an week-by-week module approach. Each week's content will be contained within a separate module that includes: group lecture activities, taking notes from the textbook readings, and additional homework. The instructor will hold both zoom office hours and in person office hours during the week to support students.
Students do not need to purchase a textbook or online homework program for this course. These will be freely provided. We will be working in groups to complete activities during class. Active participation during class will be expected. Students will need to purchase a workbook that will be used nearly every class and as additional homework. This is General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry, 2nd Edition. You can get this from the Cascade bookstore for nearly the same price that it will cost from the publisher. You can also find this book on Amazon. Do not buy a used copy on your own. It is a workbook that you write in and you will not get credit for completing your work with a used copy.
This class is delivered alongside a 1-credit laboratory course, CH 124Z. Co-enrollment in both the lecture and linked lab section is required.
Technology
The course will be using an OER textbook and WeBWorK homework. No purchase of these is necessary. However, you will be required to purchase a workbook either from the bookstore or directly from the publisher. See further information above. An internet connection and computer will be required. I will send out an email about a week before class starts giving you information about the workbook purchase.
No show policy
Your instructor can mark you as a "no show" if you do not participate in your class during the first week. This will remove you from the class.
Students with disabilities
Students with disabilities should notify their instructor if accommodations are needed to take this class. For information about technologies that help people with disabilities taking Online based classes please visit the Disability Services website.
