Details about this class

Hello! Thanks for your interest in ART 101: Intro to Architecture!

In this class, we'll explore how and why structures have been built, examine their various functions, and relate stylistic and structural features to their historical context, as well as to what we see today in contemporary architecture. We'll also work to recognize the impact of architecture on our daily lives, making connections to contemporary culture. My goal is to create a supportive classroom environment where we learn that the study of architecture is not static, but an ever-evolving discipline that YOU can actively contribute to!

Some topics we'll cover are:

  • Why does architecture matter?
  • How do we talk about architecture?
  • Utility, firmness, and beauty - how do we describe architecture?
  • Modern and Postmodern approaches to architecture.
  • Various historical building styles including ancient building techniques from around the world.
  • Sustainable structures.

There is no purchased textbook for this course. All readings and other learning resources will be provided via our course D2L page. Learning activities include: in-class activities, quizzes (3), a final reflection, and field trip(s) (alternate activities will be provided if you can't join the field trip with the class). This is an in person class that will meet twice a week.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the course. I'm happy to help :)
