The Portland Community College Department of Public Safety has issued this Safety Alert to make you aware of a potential threat in the area.

On Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at 12:42 a.m., a young woman was walking home from work when she noticed a man was approaching her from behind. The man engaged her in conversation, inquiring about her name, age and destination before offering her illegal narcotics. The young women tried to walk away from the man but he followed her into her apartment complex near 185th Avenue and Rock Creek Blvd. The male then grabbed the woman’s backpack and covered her mouth with his hand when she began to scream. At this point, a friend of the woman heard her screams and came to her aid. The suspect then fled on foot. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male adult in his early twenties, approximately 5’9” or 5’10” tall, with a slim build and a thin mustache/goatee. The suspect was wearing a plain white T-shirt and green or khaki pants. Detectives from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the public assistance to identify this suspect. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call detectives at 503-846-2500.

In closing, when it comes to personal safety do your best to remember these crime prevention tips:

  • Avoid walking or jogging alone at night if possible.
  • Be alert, observant, and aware of your surroundings and people around you.
  • Avoid dark, vacant, or deserted areas.
  • If you are followed or see suspicious activity move to a public area (lighted when at night) and act in a manner that will draw attention to you, e.g. yelling.
  • If a stranger attempts to engage you in conversation, use discretion before stopping to talk. It is a good idea to say you are in a hurry to meet someone.
  • Carry your keys, identification, and anything else of value on your person.
