How to ask for an extension
There may be moments when you can’t finish your assignment on time. In those instances, you may want to request an extension from your instructor. Remember that an extension is a request, not a guarantee. To increase your chances of approval, propose a realistic deadline for completion or ask your instructor what adjusted timeline works best for them.
Elements of an extension request
-
- Send your request from your PCC email.
- Use a short and specific subject header.
- Example: CG 101 Extension Request
- Introduce yourself in the email and state which class you are in. Some instructors teach several sections of the same class. It is very helpful to include the CRN (course registration number) as mentioned above.
- Example: My name is Poppie Panther and I am a student in your CG 101 CRN 41234 class.
- Use a greeting, closing, and signature.
- Example Greeting: Good afternoon Instructor Victor Viking,
- Example Closing: Thank you for considering,
- Example Signature: Poppie Panther
- Be specific and provide details about your request, including when you plan to turn in the assignment.
- Example: I’m writing to request an extension on Essay #1. I have been sick recently and fell behind in classes. I plan to complete Essay #1 by October 15th.
- Proofread your email before sending it out.
