Developing an online course can involve anything from building a course for online delivery for the first time to substantially redesigning an existing course. Online Learning offers several ways to support this work, depending on your goals, the scope of the project, and whether the course is being developed by an individual instructor or as part of a broader program initiative.

Developing your own course?
Faculty who are developing or substantially redesigning an online course can choose from flexible or structured development options.

Build or redesign an online course through a flexible, supported development process. DesignFlex combines targeted asynchronous learning with just-in-time instructional design guidance as you develop your course.
Work at your own pace, receive support when you need it, and complete a course quality review when your course is ready. Faculty may take up to one academic year to complete the process.
Design Flex may be a good fit if you:
- want flexibility in when and how you complete your course development
- are developing a course for online delivery
- want to substantially strengthen or redesign an existing course
- would benefit from ongoing access to instructional design guidance

Design or substantially redesign an online course through a structured, cohort-based development experience.
During the seven-week Course Design Institute, faculty work through key elements of online course design with guidance, resources, milestones, instructional design feedback, and opportunities to learn alongside colleagues. Additional design support is available as faculty continue building after the Institute.
The Course Design Institute may be a good fit if you:
- prefer a structured timeline and clear milestones
- want dedicated time to focus on course design
- value feedback and interaction with a faculty cohort
- are ready to develop or substantially redesign an online course
Developing for a Program or SAC?
All program and SAC course development projects require Program Dean approval, and the Program Dean must submit the formal request to Online Learning.
Some online course development projects have broader programmatic goals. For example, developing a new course needed for an online degree or certificate, addressing a student progression need, or creating a high-quality course that can be shared across instructors and future terms.

Signature Course Development is designed for strategically important new course development and major course redesign projects with long-term program value.
Faculty serve as the subject matter experts and provide the disciplinary content, instructional materials, and academic decisions for the course. The instructional designer leads the design and development process, with particular attention to course structure, student experience, alignment, accessibility, interaction, navigation, and Online Learning quality standards.
Signature projects span multiple academic terms and require documented SAC and academic support.
Because project funding and design capacity are limited, Signature Course Development is available through an eligibility and prioritization process. A course being new or needing substantial revision does not automatically make it eligible for a Signature project or stipend funding.
