Returning to college

Returning to college after time away can be both exciting and challenging. For adult learners, the decision to go back to school is a significant commitment that can create new opportunities personally and professionally. Adult learners also bring a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom.

Tips for adult learners returning to college

Establish a support system
  • Identify who can support you and your goals while in school. Maybe it’s friends, family, a partner, mentor, instructor, etc.
  • Ask for help from your support network when you need it. It can be hard to ask for help, but the support can be beneficial.
  • Form relationships with students in your classes. You can support each other and become part of each other’s professional networks.¹
  • Utilize PCC’s various services and resources.
Create goals and maintain motivation
  • Set goals and a plan to achieve them. Include long-term and short-term goals. Celebrate your goals as you achieve them.
  • Think about your “why” and don’t lose sight of it, especially when everything feels challenging. Why are you in school? Who are you doing this for? What are your goals?
  • Make it visible. Whether it is your “why,” a specific goal, a grade you’re proud of, etc. having something tangible and visible can help with motivation during challenging times.
Develop strong organizational practices
  • Create a schedule. Add in your class times or the time you’ll dedicate to complete the course modules. Add in your assignments, study time, and any other school responsibilities. Add in work, family responsibilities, personal time, and any other commitments.
  • PCC uses Google Workspace. Start off strong by organizing your Google Drive and Google Calendar.
  • Consider a task management system such as Notion.
  • Think about where you plan to study. The library? A coffee shop? At home? Regardless of where you choose, explore what you need for an effective study environment.
  • Browse various note taking methods. The most effective notes are easy to review – you can read and understand them, they include key terms, and you can write a clear summary from them.
