Grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi to speak via satellite

Photos and Story by

Students, faculty and friends are invited to join Phi Theta Kappa Beta Epsilon Gamma Cascade Chapter at their fourth and final live Satellite Seminar Tuesday, Nov. 14th, 4:30 pm – 5:30pm, in Cascade TH 122. The satelite presenter will be Arun Gandhi, Grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi who will address the topic "Lessons Learned from My Grandfather".

Few names in world history evoke such images of power, integrity, courage, and social justice as that of Mohandas K. Gandhi. His grandson, Arun Gandhi will speak of the power of nonviolent protest as taught to him by the legendary peace fighter and spiritual leader. In his presentation, Mr. Gandhi will describe his grandfather’s concept of a nonviolent way of life. The Gandhian philosophy can be summed up in the following quote from the legendary peacefighter, "I am willing to die, but there is no cause for which I am willing to kill." Mr. Gandhi will first explain what his grandfather meant by "nonviolence" and then provide examples of nonviolence in practice. He will also examine crisis situations in which nonviolence could have made a positive difference. As Mr. Gandhi will explain, to practice nonviolence, one must be aware that violence exists in two forms – the physical and the passive. All violence is founded on fear; therefore, the success of violence depends on instilling fear. Mr. Gandhi will ultimately argue that the United States should not resort to violence and fear to solve problems. Rather, the world needs to see the U.S. as a super-power in terms of her moral strength. The U.S. could lead the world through nonviolence with a vision of peace and harmony, but will she?
