PCC Latino Mentorship Class Offers Three-Credit Course at Rock Creek

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College will again offer Latino Mentorship, a three-credit course that gives students the skills and abilities to serve as mentors to Latino high school students who are enrolled in the Oregon Leadership Institute (OLI).

"The class was inadvertently left out of the college’s fall schedule of classes," said Paul Halloran, PCC enrollment advocate at the Rock Creek Campus, who teaches the course.

Halloran hopes that anyone interested in enrolling in the program or wanting more information, can call him at the Rock Creek Campus, 614-7438.

Last year was the first year of the program at PCC when 28 high school students were paired with 13 PCC students from the mentorship class.

The goal of the Latino Mentorship class is to strengthen students’ cultural identity, create positive relationships and expose them to Latino civic and business leaders. The class offers three transferable credits, free of charge. In exchange, the students attend a weekly class session and a monthly OLI session on Saturday during the school year.

The students in the mentorship class work with Latino high school students during the year in a variety of ways: serving as a role model, acting as resource person, providing companionship, encouraging goal setting and positive choices, acting as an advocate and helping boost confidence.

Please call Paul Halloran at 614-7438 for additional information.
