U.S. Dept. of Labor Puts PCC Student Center on the Honor Roll

Photos and Story by

Two Portland Community College departments recently received recognition from the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau by being placed on the "Working Women Count" honor roll.

The Student Resource Center at the Rock Creek Campus was recognized for a program which responds to the needs of working women and their families by providing child care for 4-to-12-year-olds during the evening. The service is available to students attending evening classes at the campus, PCC’s Workforce Training Center in Aloha, or Westview High School.

The center also provides occasional daytime care during in-service days for the area’s public school district. The availability of child care on these days and during evenings makes it easier for working parents with children to complete courses, upgrade skills or otherwise continue their education.

The center also co-sponsors parenting courses and a "Family Matters" series on parenting, finance and nutrition. Director of the center is Joanne Truesdell. The education coordinator is Kim Warren. Both women are Washington County residents.

Also placed on the honor roll was the "Women and Their Work" computer resource project. This began as a booklet accompanied by an exhibition of photos of women in non-traditional jobs which traveled the state. Now on computer, it is available as a resource to help women learn about non-traditional careers.
