About Assignments
The Assignment tool enables students to submit assignments in Brightspace, eliminating the need to mail, fax, or email their work to instructors. Assignment folders can be organized into categories to make navigating to the appropriate folder easier.

Submission & Completion
Submission Type
There are a variety of submission types available.
- File Submission – Create an assignment folder so students can submit any type of file.
- Text Submission – Create an assignment folder so students can write their responses in a built-in text editor.
- On Paper Submission – Create an assignment that doesn’t require an online submission. It acts as a placeholder for directions, can be linked to the gradebook, and still allows online feedback.
- Observed in Person – Create an assignment that doesn’t require an online submission. It is a placeholder for directions and can be linked to the gradebook.
Allowable File Extension
- No Restrictions (default & recommended)
- Learn more about restricted file extensions such as PDF only, annotable files, files that can be previewed without conversion, images and videos, and custom file types.
