Section 12: Work Schedule

Work Year

Full-time employee status is based on a position being budgeted for 2080 hours during the 12 month fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). For definitions of part-time employee and casual employee status, see Section 1, Definitions.

Work Week/Work Day (Exempt)

The work of management/supervisory and confidential exempt employees is generally professional in nature and cannot be easily defined by a standard schedule for daily hours, nor, in some cases, days of the week. Variations from an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule including breakfast or evening meetings and attendance at weekend events are not uncommon. Job requirements may necessitate additional days, longer hours and/or an adjusted work schedule. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime.

Work Week/Work Day (Non-exempt)

Full time confidential employees normally are scheduled to work a 40 hour work week with the schedule to be determined by the supervisor. The weekly schedule may be a flex-time schedule as approved by the supervisor.

Flex-Time

Flex-time schedules can benefit both the employee and the College. An employee interested in working flex-time may make a proposal to their supervisor outlining the benefits to be obtained by both parties. The proposal must also identify the preferred hours/days to be worked, what happens if the employee cannot work the schedule as proposed and any other information that would be valuable to the supervisor in making a decision about a flex-time schedule.

The supervisor will meet with the employee to discuss the proposal before making a decision.

Overtime for Non-Exempt Employees

Federal and State laws require that non-exempt employees be paid one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for any work over 40 hours in a week. Overtime hours shall be compensated by overtime pay or compensatory time off as requested by the employee.

Overtime must be approved by the supervisor in advance. Overtime may be required. Whenever possible, reasonable notice will be given. Only if the supervisor does not approve overtime pay may the employee decline to work the additional hours.

Conferences and Workshops

Attendance at conferences, workshops and other College-approved activities may count as part of the 40 hour work week upon prior approval of the supervisor.
