This was my submission for week 1, still life: negative space– it depicts two Buddhist icons: a prayer wheel and a necklace of prayer beads– 108 skulls carved from bones. The original idea behind the piece was to represent the sound of the prayer wheel visually– as such, the stippling around each icon loosely resembles the peaks in an audio wave. This piece was originally intended to be about sound as negative/positive space, but it came to be more about doubt and faith– specifically doubt in religion, and faith in oneself.
