For this assignment, we were asked to find a New York Times op-ed and illustrate it. I stumbled upon a lovely story about 150,000 purple martins that had come to roost in the pandemic-deserted courtyard of the Nashville symphony hall. I stove to capture both the literal subject matter (the symphony and the birds) as well as the figurative sense of flight that music often evokes. The final image was produced as a "jigsaw" block print, allowing me to ink the two sections of the background separately from the ribbon of the musical staff.
